The Open Source Way Done Wrong

Schedule:
2011-06-06 16:30 - 17:10
Abstract:

In this presentation, various common mistakes are discussed. Red Hat shares some examples, and we'd like to gather some from you, if you will provide others from your team or other organizations that apply during the presentation.

One of the challenges of doing business the open source way is the balance of experience and expectations in your employees and shareholders. Accurately practicing the principles of open source requires diligence and patience. Sometimes other instincts and requirements cross the pathway of essential community principles.

Putting your community principles first in action and in risk analysis is essential to accurate practice of the open source way.

Ironically, even the best organizations are not always the best at what they do. Sometimes they break every rule in The Open Source Way.  In fact, every rule is being broken right now, somewhere inside of our favorite organizations.

Doing the Impossible: Managing Open Source Communities

Schedule:
2011-06-07 17:15 - 17:55
Abstract:

Today's open source world is a completely heterogeneous mix of voluntary communities, open source service providers, non-for-profit associations, government agencies and many more actors. In this context it is a great challenge for a firm to manage successfully its open source projects and create a properous community for them. Several recent examples have shown that such business-controlled communities broke apart through the forking of the project. This speech will analyze why voluntary contributors are beneficious to an open source community, how different types of open source projects are governed, and, by providing examples, what companies have to do to direct their own communities through the perfect balance between control and openness.

Roadmap for a successful migration from RISC/Unix to RHEL on HP ProLiant Xeon Servers

Schedule:
2011-06-07 17:15 - 17:55
Abstract:

Based on a joint initiative from HP, Intel and Red Hat, hosted at the Grenoble, France HP/Intel EMEA Solution Center, this presentation will detail how to plan the Roadmap for a successful RISC/Unix to ProLiant/Xeon/RHEL migration.

Of course, migrating from RISC/Unix to ProLiant/IA/RHEL comprises code porting. Combining their joint forces, HP, Intel and Red Hat can help partners and customers dramatically reduce the time of migration, as well as the risk around it. Methods, tools and services are in place today to help you in that process.

Then modifications are also required at the infrastructure level to support operating an Open Source Next Generation Data Center (provisioning, deployment, monitoring, security, virtualization, packaging, ...) up to the day to day operation of the final solution.

Finally migrating is not only made of technical activities: it also includes the study of the impact of Open Source introduction into your IT Governance program. HP has more than 10 years of experience to share in Open Source Governance.

HP/Intel/Red Hat joined forces to allow our common customers and partners to achieve a global succesful migration over time allowing hardware and software independence, TCO reduction, IT control improvement.
